Al Tanf Base – A Strategic and Critical Base for the Interests of the US and its Allies

The American Base in Al-Tanf – A Vital Strategic Base for Disrupting the Shiite Axis and Counter terrorism.

In recent months, U.S. forces in Syria have undergone a redeployment. They have abandoned some bases in eastern Syria, and it appeared that the American presence in Al-Tanf (southeastern Syria) was also under review. The Al-Tanf base, strategically located in the border region between Iraq, Jordan, and Syria, remains critical to U.S. interests in the Middle East. Positioned along the M2 highway, during the Assad regime’s rule, it disrupted Iranian supply lines through the shortest route in southern Syria to Hezbollah and other actors in Syria, undermining Tehran’s regional influence. By controlling this key crossing point, the U.S. prevented the operation of the shortest route in Iran’s land corridor to the Mediterranean, a major geopolitical concern for both the U.S. and its allies, such as Israel. The threat of the Shiite axis has not disappeared with the fall of the Assad regime. On the contrary, Iran and Hezbollah continue to attempt to destabilize the region, particularly in southern Syria, and are working to rebuild their terror infrastructure in this area. The continued U.S. presence in Al-Tanf will keep disrupting the axis’ activities. The fight against the Shiite axis remains a shared interest of the U.S. and Israel, and today, it is also a shared interest with the new Syrian regime. Additionally, Al-Tanf serves as a critical outpost for counterterrorism efforts. It enables U.S. forces to monitor and combat the resurgence of ISIS, which is rearing its head in the Syrian desert. The base’s proximity to Jordan also supports American partners and ensures stability in a volatile region. Its small size—housing approximately 200 U.S. soldiers—belies its immense strategic value, as it provides intelligence, surveillance, and rapid response capabilities. Abandoning U.S. control over the Al-Tanf region would result in more losses than gains from the perspective of American, Israeli, and Syrian national security.

  1. What you don’t know is that the new authority in Syria is not completely far from the Iranian regime and its extremist ideology, and signs of rapprochement and cooperation between them against Israeli lands have begun. You should have known the ways of thinking of the Muslim Brotherhood and their tricks.

  2. Dear Tal and Colin,
Your article has my full support. The USA cannot withdraw and leave a vacuum for terrorists to reclaim as was done in Afghanistan, and the people are again subjugated, and now suffering under oppressive radical jihaddists.
“Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof”
This is the Declaration of the Almighty inscribed upon the USA Liberty Bell.
Duty calls us to fulfill the Promise of God.
