In the early hours of April 1, the commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, Hajj Youssef Ismail Hashem—known by his organizational (“jihadi”) nickname “Hajj Sadiq”—was eliminated. The operation was carried out by the navy. Hajj Sadiq had assumed the role following the elimination of Ali Karaki in 2024. The Southern Front is responsible for the operation and force buildup of Hezbollah’s military capabilities in southern Lebanon. He was considered one of the senior figures in Hezbollah’s military leadership. According to various reports, during the Syrian civil war he participated in commanding numerous military operations alongside the Assad regime’s forces and was responsible, in coordination with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, for the entrenchment of the Shiite axis in eastern Syria (Al-Bukamal–Deir ez-Zor), including through the acquisition of assets and recruitment of local operatives.
