During the night, the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC Navy), Ali Reza Tangsiri, was eliminated. He had been serving in this position since August 2018. Tangsiri, who was born in 1962 in Bushehr Province in western Iran, served as Commander of the Northern Persian Gulf Maritime Areas and the Strait of Hormuz region until 2009. He was then appointed Deputy Commander of the IRGC Navy until his promotion to Commander. Tangsiri was responsible for enforcing the Iranian blockade on the Strait of Hormuz and oversaw the IRGC Navy’s maritime terrorism activities in the region. International sanctions were imposed on him for his involvement in arms smuggling with Russia and Syria during the Assad regime. Along with Tangsiri, the head of the Intelligence Department of the IRGC Navy, Behnam Rezaei, was also eliminated. Under Tangsiri’s command serve five regional commanders responsible for the operational areas under the IRGC Navy. The area directly responsible for the Strait of Hormuz is Operational Area No. 1 – the “Bandar Abbas Area,” the largest of the five areas. Its commander since 2016 has been General Abbas Gholamshahi.
