A significant challenge for IDF forces currently maneuvering in southern Lebanon. In recent years, there has been significant development in explosive drones, drone swarms, and drones equipped with a “first-person perspective” camera, enabling the drone operator to view the flight from the drone’s own point of view (FPV). FPV-type drones allow operation based on a line of sight from the drone to its target, similar to a pilot in an aircraft. This technology gives the drone operator an advantage in tracking targets and improving the ability to strike with high precision. On the battlefield, this capability enables widespread use of drones for a variety of missions, ranging from reconnaissance and intelligence gathering to direct attacks against different types of targets. These are inexpensive commercial drones, easy to acquire, and can be adapted for military missions with an emphasis on attack. As early as 2024, we saw videos by Hezbollah showing its use of FPV drones. It appears that today their use by Hezbollah is increasing. Ground forces are required to deal with low-altitude threats from such drones. A swarm of 100 attacking drones controlled from a single operating station is no longer imaginary. Even a scenario of 10 or 20 drones, each controlled by a single operator with the simplicity of smartphone operation, is sufficiently severe.
