Last night (between August 2nd and 3rd), IDF troops thwarted an attempt to place explosive devices near the Israel-Syria border in the area of al-Rafeed by a terror squad of 4 combatants.
We assume the squad was part of the “Golan Portfolio” unit and was deployed as a terror cell in this area. The “Golan Portfolio” unit, whose activists are Syrian locals, is part of Hezbollah and is deployed as its proxy.
Our assessment is that the thwarted terror attack was not a stand-alone one, but rather was in line with Hezbollah’s desire to retaliate against the death of its combatant in the IDF’s alleged attack on an Iranian ammunition storage near Damascus two weeks ago.
At the site of the incident, weapons and ready-to-detonate explosives were found, about 25 meters (82 feet) inside Israel’s territory.
