Escalation in Southern Syria: Significant Fire Incident Against IDF in Beit Jinn

On November 28, an IDF force conducted an arrest of two terrorists from the Jama’a Al-Islamiya organization in the village of Beit Jinn, located on the slopes of Mount Hermon in southern Syria. During the operation, the ground force received effective fire. In the incident, several terrorists were eliminated by the IDF, and 6 IDF soldiers were wounded. This is not the first shooting incident against IDF forces in the buffer zone in southern Syria, but it is the most significant incident with casualties among IDF forces for the first time.

To date, we are aware of two additional incidents where fire was opened on IDF forces: on February 1, 2025, in the Taranga area, and on March 13, 2025, in the Kuwaya area near the border triangle with Jordan. Southern Syria is saturated with local terrorist cells operating in dozens of villages (even during the Assad regime era). These are local individuals, some of whom are activated solely for money (regardless of ideological affiliation), while others are ideologically aligned with the relevant organizations. The terrorist cells operating in southern Syria are affiliated with Jama’a Al-Islamiya, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, ISIS, and of course the Shiite axis (Iran and Hezbollah).

In addition to Jama’a Al-Islamiya, Beit Jinn is known as a hub for terrorist squads from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization and serves as a geographical anchor in the smuggling route between Syria and Lebanon, which is tightly controlled by Hezbollah. The Jama’a Islamiya operatives in Beit Jinn are affiliated with the organization in Lebanon and its military wing (“Al-Fajr”), which is linked to Hamas, a connection we have reported on multiple times during the war and the ceasefire.
