Involvement of the Amal Movement in the Fighting Against Israel Alongside Hezbollah

Alongside its prominent political status, led by Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, the Amal Movement maintains an active military apparatus during the fighting. Amal possesses military infrastructure, armed operatives, and operational capabilities, and operates in coordination with Hezbollah. Evidence of this can be seen in recent publications documenting Amal operatives killed since the beginning of the current fighting against Israel (March 2026), indicating the organization’s direct involvement in combat alongside Hezbollah. Moreover, recently, IDF forces exposed an Amal weapons depot in al-Khiam, containing mines, machine guns, rifles, shells, and additional military equipment. It should be noted that during the 2023–2024 war, dozens of Amal operatives were killed in combat. The partnership between Amal and Hezbollah is not limited to the military arena, but also exists at the political-institutional level, where both organizations operate as a unified bloc to preserve their power and influence in Lebanon. Together, Amal and Hezbollah form the “Shiite duo” – a political, social, and security power structure that dominates the Shiite sphere in Lebanon. While Nabih Berri seeks to project a statesmanlike and relatively moderate image, he appears to be conducting a dual strategy—assuming he indeed maintains control over the organization he leads. The confrontation with Israel in the Lebanese arena is not limited to Hezbollah alone but involves a range of organizations operating from Lebanese territory, including Shiite actors alongside additional terrorist organizations. Within this framework operates an integrated Shiite axis, led by Hezbollah, in which Amal serves as an active partner—politically, organizationally, and operationally. Under Nabih Berri, Amal constitutes an integral part of the Lebanese Shiite “resistance” system against Israel.
