We still do not know what caused the explosion in Beirut, but we can see its results.
The center of the blast at the port of Beirut was very close to the wheat silos at the port.
These silos contained the wheat reserves of Lebanon and because of the explosion the silos were destroyed and the wheat stock that was in them was destroyed. Ideally, the silos can contain up to 120 thousand tons of wheat grain.
The director of the UN World Food Program (WFP) David Beasley said in an interview with CNN (August 12th) that as a result of the destruction of Lebanon’s wheat reserves, Lebanon has enough bread for only two and a half weeks, so the world must hurry and help it.
He added that so far, the WFP has delivered to Lebanon 17,500 tons of flour, which will be enough for about 20 days.
In the near future, the WFP will transfer about 30,000 tons of grain and for this purpose it is necessary to clean and rehabilitate part of the port and install new cranes.
